A Higher National Diploma (HND) in Career Guidance and Counseling aims to develop students’ abilities to apply career guidance and counseling principles and methods to a variety of settings and situations, to help clients achieve their education, training and career goals, and to promote lifelong learning and employability.
The program covers topics such as theories and principles of guidance and counselling, assessment and evaluation methods, career development and planning, counseling skills and techniques, ethical and legal issues, diversity and inclusion. It also includes practical skills to provide career guidance and counseling services to various clients, such as students, job seekers, employees, etc. It also enhances professional skills in communication, teamwork, problem solving, leadership, and ethical practice.
This is a two-year qualification which provides students with the skills and knowledge to pursue a career in education, training and career development, with a focus on aspects of career guidance and counselling, which aims to provide students with the following objective:
- Develop a comprehensive understanding of guidance and counseling theories and principles, as well as assessment and development methods, career development and planning models, counseling skills and techniques, ethical and legal issues, and diversity and inclusion factors that are relevant to the career guidance and counseling field.
- Acquire practical skills in providing professional guidance and counseling services to various clients, such as students, job seekers, employees, etc., in various settings, such as schools, colleges, universities, training centers, placement agencies, etc.
- Improve professional skills in communication, teamwork, problem solving, leadership and ethical practice in the context of career guidance and counselling.
- Enable progression to further study at Level 6 or employment in the career guidance and counseling sector.
By completing the HND in Career Guidance and Counselling, students will be able to:
- Analyze a school situation and draw the possible consequences on the academic and professional choices of students.
- Stimulate the self-knowledge, interest and skills of customers, as well as inform them about the different trades and professions available on the market.
- Promote the emergence of a realistic, achievable and satisfactory school and professional project for the clients.
- Build interest in education and motivate clients to pursue their education and career goals.
- Reduce course/program failure, repetition and dropout by providing appropriate support and counseling to clients.
- Develop skills and abilities that meet labor market/societal needs by providing clients with relevant training and education opportunities.
- Assess clients’ abilities and interest and develop their attitude toward work by providing feedback and coaching.
- Develop choice readiness and ability to face challenges by providing guidance and empowerment to clients.
